Fanfare for the Common Cow

There was a family celebration on a dairy farm. Taking a walk I entered a vast stable and I was instantly impressed and touched by the sheer presence of forty, fifty cows munching their fodder. I recorded the sounds hoping to gather this feeling I had for a moment, the feeling of being in good hands amongst those big, steaming bodies.

Later on, when I checked the recording for a soundscape I discovered the calves calling from outside, from the boxes where they are kept separate from their mothers. Only then I realized that the deep voices - I had perceived just as a sound were the answering calls of suckler cows. And realizing the idea of those creatures spending their life for our daily milk, I thought of some atonal music as an answer to the voices and percussive sounds of stable facilities played on by the cows, a piano and flutes performing in the middle of it, music I could dedicate to those creatures.
