about

Constantin Brâncuși's »Infinite Column«: It is composed of 32 elements, each half of a rhombus. With the last element, the column opens up to the sky. In this arrangement, the Romanian authors Nina May and George Dumitriu see a standing wave with eight whole oscillations. My admiration for the sculpture, a Stairway to Heaven, and a Memorial at the same time, was driven on by this thought.

While working on Continuum 8, the standing wave came to mind. I saw the peaks and troughs of the wave appear in the temporal structure of the piece, like an "infinite pillar" set aside.

György Ligeti speaks of inherent patterns in his piece »Continuum for harpsichord«, of something that one does not hear although it is nevertheless played. In a related sense, the idea of the »Infinite Column« is found in »Continuum 8«.
